#17 of 365: Self-portrait by Candlelight

This is the first in a series of self-portraits I shot a couple days ago by candlelight.
The shot was made in an otherwise pitch-black room by the light of a single candle.
I think it makes a very interesting effect.
For technical details on how to do this, check out my instruction blog at:

This is the sixth in my series of seven self-portraits I made of myself smoking.
I think this may be the best of the group. Love the way the smoke is swirling.

#10 of 365: Self-portrait, smoking 02

This is the second in a series of seven
self-portraits I made of myself smoking.
What I like about this one is the composition - the strong diagonal of the
cigar leading into the picture - and the radical cropping with one eye
cut in two. This is the type of thing I'm going for.

#9 of 365: Self-portrait, smoking 01

No, I don't smoke, but I risked my health to do a series of self-portraits with
a cigar. Worth the risk, I think. It's just very interesting to see smoke -
which usually disappears like, well, smoke - frozen in space.

#1 of 365: Lisa

Hi, everybody!

This is the first of what I plan to be 365 portraits posted in the course of the coming year. Thanks and congratulations to Lisa for being the first of the 365! If you would like to participate in this project by modeling for me (and you live in Louisville), please get in touch with me at lancenelsonporter@gmail.com.

Tuesday, April 3, 2012

Welcome to The 365 Project!

Starting on April 7, 2012, I'm challenging myself to post a new black-and-white portait on this blog every day for a year. Obviously, I'm going to need a lot of models! If you are an interesting person with an interesting face, please get in touch! I can't pay you anything, but I will email you both a high-res (for printing) and low-res (for the Internet) verson of your portrait - and you will always be able to say that you were one of the 365! I'm based in Louisville, so you probably need to be in Louisville, too. You don't have to be young and beautiful - these are character studies, and the more character you have, the better. Tatoos? Great! Piercings? Awesome! Some kind of crazy/fantastic hair, moustache, beard? Come on down! I'm especially interested in shooting musicians, dancers, athletes, artists, and bikers. I definitely want to include all the racial and ethnic diversity that makes Louisville fantastic. If you're interested, please email me a snapshot at: lancenelsonporter@gmail.com. Thanks!
